On many internet forums and sites Teens and/or Grandparents seek info on adoption, custody and more in regards their teens who have become pregnant or got their girlfriend pregnant. I will break this down into 3 groups so apply my answers to these issues.
You (The Grandparents) have zero rights to this child! You still have 100% control over your teen but not his/her child! The teen (female will explain later) has all rights to her unborn child! Where you, the parents or (Grandparents to be) may discuss options like adoption you do NOT have decision making authority! The pregnant teen has 100% control and say so over adoption, abortion, custody etc. You the grandparent have none. However you cannot be forced to support the child just the the teen! Once again may try to influence the teens choice on how to deal with pregnancy but you cannot decide for her. You also remain legally responsible for your teen under the age of majority.
Father of child:
Now this could get dicey depending on age of Father but that can be another article. Lets address the Father’s rights and say so over same issues of adoption, custody, abortion etc. First off the Father is NOT The Father until after child is born and he signs birth documents and/or is declared Father through courts. This usually involves DNA testing. Until this happens he also has ZERO say so in any of the aforementioned issues. Now if the Father wants to he may file a paternity claim in effort to block any pending action like adoption and custody. He cannot however prevent Mom to be from aborting child! If Mom keeps child this Father can e required to pay Child support. This happens if Mom seeks court order of support or if Mom seeks help through State (welfare, Food Stamps etc). The amount will vary based on many factors.
The young lady now carrying an unborn child has all the cards in her hands. She and she alone can decide on whether or not to abort child. She also has say so over adoption or keeping child. Its worth restating that the Teen Mom’s parents are NOT legally obligated to support their grandchild only their under age teen! Now if The Father seeks courts help he could block adoption or pursue custody. If Teen Mom is a minor and Father an adult he should think carefully before doing this as it could have adverse effects. Teen Mom (as stated) holds all the cards. she should seek unbiased counseling or opinions before making any decision as this will no doubt impact her for life. Its also worth mentioning that being pregnant does NOT emancipate you!
